The Kano State House of Assembly turned into a rowdy session on Wednesday as members debated the state Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje’s bill seeking to create four new emirates.

The Assembly failed to agree on the passage of the new Emirate Council Bill 2019, which was sent by Governor Ganduje to restore the four first-class emirates that were dissolved by a Kano high court.

Members spent hours in a secret session debating the bill but failed to reach an agreement.

The house adjourned the meeting till Thursday to continue debate on the issue.

The state’s commissioner of information, Muhammad Garba, had on Monday said some of the emirates annulled by the court existed before the Kano emirate, and thus the government’s move was to revive the emirates after the failed attempt by previous regimes.

He announced that the Kano State Executive Council had approved the Emirate Council Bill 2019 which provides for the establishment of the additional Emirates in the state.

“To this end, the Council has, with this development, endorsed the establishment of four new Emirates namely Rano, Gaya, Bichi and Karaye and forward same to the state Assembly for necessary action,” he said.
