Confusion over PDP convention

Published

on

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday countered the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party on holding a national convention to elect the national chairman of the party.

The office of the national chairman of the party as well as that of the BoT chairman became vacant on May 20, following the resignation of Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu and Tony Anenih who held the respective positions.

Secretary of the PDP BoT, Walid Jibrin, has said going by the party’s position, a convention would hold in August when it will complete the three months allowed to act, to elect the national chairman as well as chairman of the BoT.

But a source in the PDP said since Jibrin came out with the position, those in the NWC did not take it lightly with him saying their tenure expires in March next year hence there won’t be any need for a convention to fill the vacant positions.

And barely three weeks to August, no arrangement is being made towards holding the convention even as those interested in filling the positions have been making inquiries on the procedure for the election.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, confirmed that the NWC was not keen on holding the convention.

He said those saying that the national convention would hold in August, can hold it anywhere they like, stressing that the exercise will not hold until the expiration of the tenure of the present national officers in March, 2016.

He added that the PDP post-election review committee led by Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu, must submit its report before the convention will be convened.

“I think the convention will hold in Cotonou or Ghana for those who want it in August. But the PDP convention that I know is holding in March, 2016, in Nigeria after the Ekweremadu-led committee would have submitted the report of its findings,” he said.
