Consider speedily, Buhari tells Senate as he nominates Muhammad substantive CJN

Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Muhammad, has finally been nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari as substantive CJN.

His nomination was confirmed by the Senate President Ahmed Lawan at the floor of the Senate on Thursday.

According to the Senate President, Buhari prayed the federal lawmakers to accord the confirmation of Justice Muhammad urgent consideration.

The nomination came just as the National Judicial Council (NJC) on Wednesday recommended Justice Muhammad to Buhari for confirmation as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Buhari had on January 25, 2019 appointed Justice Muhammad as the acting CJN after suspending the former CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, over alleged asset declaration offence.

In his letter to the Senate Buhari wrote, “I have the honour to forward the nomination of honourable Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed for confirmation as Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“It is my hope that this request will receive the usual expeditious cooperation of the distinguished Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

In another letter, Buhari also urged the Senate to approve the appointment of 15 senior special advisers.

No names of the nominees for special advisers were attached to the letter.
