Conte punishing Mikel for attending Olympics --Rohr

Nigeria Coach Gernot Rohr has revealed that Chelsea coach Antonio Conte is punishing Super Eagles captain for attending the Rio 2016 Olympics by keeping him on the bench at the club.

Mikel has not played a minute of football since coach Antonio Conte took over last summer.

Speaking during a media parley in Uyo ahead of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Algeria, Rohr said Mikel remains an integral member of his team.

“Mikel was punished by Chelsea for playing at the Olympics for Nigeria. The new coach tried convincing him to stay but he went to defend his nation. I cannot punish him for not playing in his club” He said.

He said Mikel’s experince was vital to the team’ success and the Chelsea man will be the main driver on the pitch for Eagles.

“Mikel is fit enough to play against Algeria. He trains regularly with the team even though he is not playing. I know training is different from match situation but Mikel brings something special to this group,” he said.

The coach also has praises for another Chelsea star Victor Moses saying his return into the national team makes the side stronger.

Moses has become one of the most important figures in Chelsea dressing room following stellar performances for the side in the last one month.

“I have been watching Moses in Chelsea and I am happy he is back in this team. I am impressed with his performance for his club and his addition to this team is going make us stronger,” he added.
