COPA: Alaves edge past Celta Vigo to set up Barcelona final

Spanish club Alaves reached the Copa del Rey final for the first time in their 96-year history with a shocking 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo in their semi-final second leg on Wednesday night.

Winger Edgar Mendez scored the only goal of the two games when he lifted the ball over keeper Sergio Alvarez and into the net in the 83rd minute.

“We’re going to enjoy tonight and we’ll try to go for glory in May but we’ve already made history,” Alaves captain Manu Garcia said.

“Not even in our greatest dreams did we imagine something like this,” Alaves midfielder Kiko Femenia said. “But we deserved it after all that we have done until
now.”

The side will now play two-time defending champions Barcelona FC (who knocked out Atletico Madrid with a 3-2 aggregate) in the Final of the competition on May 27, 2017.
