CORONAVIRUS: US records 2000 deaths in 24-hrs, as Italy extends lockdown till May

Health authorities in the United States of America have recorded no fewer than 2,108 coronavirus deaths in 24 hours, the highest daily increase in the country since the outbreak began.

The figures declared by health officials in the US on Friday, now pushes the total death toll in the country to 18,777 since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.

Coronavirus deaths in the US state of New York jumped by 777 in one day, as the number of people hospitalised stayed relatively flat, according to the AP news agency.

More than 3,000 deaths have been recorded since Monday to bring the statewide count to 7,844.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Italy Giuseppe Conte announced on Friday that the country will remain in full lockdown until May 3 to stem the tide of new coronavirus infections.

“If we gave up now, we would put all the positive results achieved so far at stake and restart with a new rise in the death toll,” Conte said.
