Umar’s freedom was said to have been secured  as a result of steps taken by key stakeholders, as well as negotiations involving the state government and the Kalthum Foundation for Peace, a non-governmental organisation.

According to reports, the steps were also taken to open lines of communication with the rebels as a means of securing the freedom of more captives held by the terrorist group.
