CORRUPTION CHARGES: Brazil's Congress lets Temer off the hook

Relief has come the way of embattled President of Brazil, Michel Temer, after Congress rejected corruption charges against him, preventing him from Supreme Court trial which could have seen him ousted from office.

According to reports, at least 172 of the 513 members of the lower Chamber of Deputies had voted by late Wednesday against putting Temer on trial, thereby rejecting a corruption charge against him for allegedly taking bribes.

Speaking after Temer secured his stay in office, Al Jazeera’s Daniel Schweimler, reporting from Brasilia, said Temer was always confident he would win the vote and had pledged over $1bn of government funds for projects to various members of congress to ensure their vote.

“So he is no doubt is breathing a sigh of relief – for now at least,” said Schweimler.

Days ago, Temer was struggling with another battle to stay in office after the Brazilian congress pushed to vote on whether to remove him from power but the coast seems all clear for him now.

Recall that a month ago, Temer was slammed with corruption charges by prosecutors who accused him of receiving a $150,000 bribe from the boss of a meatpacking company implicated in a corruption scandal.

Brazil’s Supreme Court Prosecutor General, Rodrigo Janot, also received a filing against Temer for alleged obstruction of justice and membership of a criminal group.
