COUP ATTEMPT: Turkey slams 14 journalists with "terror" charges

Turkish authorities have continued its crackdown on nationals suspected to have links with US-based figure Fethullah Gulen blamed for the failed 2016 coup attempt after 14 journalists were slammed with “terror” charges.

According to state media, 14 pen pushers who are staff members of the opposition Cumhuriyet newspaper were slammed with “terrorism” charges by a Turkish court with three others acquitted.

Among those charged are renowned journalists, including investigative reporter Ahmet Sik, who was sentenced to seven years and six months while another journalist and columnist Kadri Gursel was sentenced to 30 months.

The court handed cartoonist Musa Kart a three-year-and-nine-month sentence, while Cumhuriyet editor-in-chief Murat Sabuncu was sentenced to seven years and six months.

The Turkish government says Gulen orchestrated the failed coup on July 15, 2016, in Turkey which killed 250 people – mostly civilians – and left nearly 2,200 injured.
