Court adjourns corruption case against ex-President Zuma

Embattled former president of South Africa Jacob Zuma is about now heaving a sigh of temporary relief after a Durban High Court adjourned an ongoing corruption case against him.

The case was adjourned by the presiding judge while Zuma who is facing charges of corruption over a $2.5 billion arms deal struck years back, sat in the dock of a packed courtroom.

Reports say scores of Zuma’s supporters rallied outside Durban’s high court on Friday protesting his innocence and demanding a halt to the prosecution.

“There is an unfairness in the judiciary,” warned Bishop Timothy Ngcobo, one of the organisers of Thursday’s gathering.

“We believe God did stand with Jesus Christ when he was detained. We say also he can stand with Jacob Zuma,” added Pastor Nqoba Zindela, another organiser.

The decision to drag Zuma to court who announced his resignation on February 14, 2018 came after the National Prosecuting Authority said it would seek to prosecute him on 16 charges, including fraud, racketeering, corruption and money laundering.

According to reports, Zuma was deputy president at the time of the arms deal which is now threatening to drag him down.

Schabir Shaikh, his former financial adviser, was also found guilty and jailed in 2005 for trying to solicit bribes for Zuma from a French arms company.
