Court convicts Diamond bank staff for stealing from customer

How Diamond Bank refused to act after staff stole N.4m from customer

A former staff of Diamond Bank, Elijah Joseph John, while working at the bank reportedly stole N400,000 from the account of a customer, Aniebeit Daniel Udeme.

John was dragged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges bothering on computer related forgery, identity theft and impersonation.

He was reported to the Commission by Udeme who said he deposited the sum of N400, 000. 00 into his account, and the said sum was moved out of his account same day.

According to him, he reported the unauthorised transaction to the bank but was later told that the transaction could not be reversed, hence he petitioned the anti-graft Commission.

According to EFCC, an investigation into the complaint revealed that it was John that moved the funds for his personal gain by fraudulenty activating mobile banking on his phone, using the victim’s banking details under the pretex that he was assisting the victim in resolving a mobile banking issue.

On conclusion of investigations, John was subsequently arraigned before Justice Fatun Riman of the Federal High Court in Uyo the Akwa Ibom state capital

Delivering judgement on the matter on Tuesday, Justice Riman convicted and sentenced John following a plea bargain he entered before the court.

He pleaded guilty on the two count charge preferred against him by the EFCC.

While sentencing the convict, Justice Riman ordered him to be of “best behaviour” for the next three years and also to pay a fine of N100,000.

The prosecuting counsel Barr. N. K. Ukoha immediately thanked the court.

The convict had since paid the stolen N400,000 to the owner.
