Court disbands EbubeAgu security outfit over alleged human rights abuse

The Federal High Court, Abakaliki, on Tuesday disbanded the South-East security outfit Ebubeagu in Ebonyi State.

The ruling followed reported cases of human rights abuses, extortions, illegal arrests, and the use of firearms by Ebubeagu operatives in the state.

The Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, had on Monday expressed concern over the incessant killing of operatives of the security out in the state.

The governor, who spoke when he received the report of a Commission of Inquiry on the Ekoli Eddah crisis at the Government House in Abakaliki, insisted that those calling for the disbandment of Ebubeagu were behind the attacks.

A police inspector, a seven-month pregnant wife of an Ebubeagu commander, and two others were killed in the crisis.

Umahi said: “There are people who have been insisting, castigating, and giving fake news on Ebubeagu so that the outfit will be disbanded. There is no way else to doubt who are the people instigating these killings.

“We have so many killings in Ezza North, we have so many killings in Ohaozara, we have killings in Isu axis. In Isu a traditional ruler was abducted and killed up to today, nothing has been said about it. We have so many killings of Ebubeagu personals.

“Government officials are going to do a comprehensive petition and submit it to all the quarters that are concerned.”
