A review of the 1957 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration and other Related Chieftaincies in Ibadan land by the Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, which led to the installation of 21 kings by the governor, has been described as unconstitutional, illegal, null, void and of no effect by an Oyo State High Court.

Ajimobi had set up the Review Commission led by Justice Akintunde Boade with the mandate to review the 1957 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration and other Related Chieftaincies in Ibadan land.

The commission had in the discharge of its mandate, recommended among others, the creation of several monarchs in Ibadan. The development later led to the installation of 21 kings by the state’s Governor Ajimobi.

However, the Osi Olubadan of Ibadan land, Rashidi Ladoja, had in a suit the governor was joined as a co-defendant, asked the court to declare the composition and recommendations of the commission as illegal.

And ruling on the matter on Friday, the presiding judge, Justice Olajumoke Aiki, nullified the review and composition of the commission.

The judge held that wearing of beaded crowns is beyond the purview of sections 10, 12 and 25 of the Oyo State Chiefs Law. He added that Section 25 of the Chiefs Law could not be treated in isolation to the provisions of Parts Two and Three of the Chiefs Laws.

The court further held that provisions of Parts Two and Three of the Chiefs Laws, particularly sections 10, 12 and 25, did not give power to the governor to review the Olubadan chieftaincy declaration, while also restraining the government from accepting and implementing the reports of the commission.
