Sen Dino Melaye kidnapped

A Kogi High Court has issued a bench warrant against one of the four persons accused in the alleged assassination attempt on Senator Dino Melaye in April, 2017.

The court bench warrant was issued on the accused, Ade Obege on Friday after he failed to appear in court for trial and did not provide any cogent reason for his absence.

Justice Fola Ajayi, who issued the order of arrest, also ordered that summons be served on Obege’s sureties.

Also not in court on Friday, was the prosecuting counsel, Lough Simon, but Samuel Ikutanwa held brief for him.

Ikutanwa explained to the court that the prosecutor was unable to be in court owing to the death of his father.

Noting that the development had been communicated to the parties, Ikutanwa said that he was not provided with the details of proceedings on the matter.

On why Obege was not in court, his counsel, Mr. Ayo Jonathan, explained that the last time he saw his client was on March 22 when he came to court for his trial. He further told the court that even the wife of his client told him that she had not set her eyes on her husband since March 22 when he left Okene for Lokoja.

Jonathan then told the court that Obege could be missing.

Following Jonathan’s submission, Ikutanwa urged the court to issue a bench warrant against the second accused since there was no cogent reason for not being in court.

The trial judge then issued the bench warrant against Obege, and ordered that his sureties be summoned to court.

He thereafter, adjourned the case till May 14 and May 15 for definite hearing.
