Court orders release of El-Zakzaky’s wife for COVID-19 treatment

The Kaduna State High Court on Monday ordered the release of Zeenat, wife of the leader of Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibraheem El-Zakzaky to enable to seek treatment for COVID-19.

Members of the IMN had earlier called for the release of El-Zakzaky and his wife following claims that the woman had contracted COVID-19 at the Kaduna correctional facility where they are being detained.

El-Zakzaky’s counsel, Femi Falana (SAN), told the court that the IMN leader’s wife had tested positive for COVID-19 and presented a medical report to back up his case.

He urged the court to allow Zeenat to seek treatment for the disease in a proper medical facility.

However, the prosecution brought four witnesses including a medical doctor to testify before the court.

Justice Gideon Kurada, who delivered the judgment, ordered that Zeenat be moved to a government isolation facility to begin treatment immediately in line with the measures put in place by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The Kaduna State government arraigned El-Zakzaky and his wife on an eight-count charge of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, and disruption of public peace following a clash between the IMN followers and the Nigerian Army in Zaria in December 2015.
