Court refuses to allow APC participate in Anambra Central senatorial election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) will not be participating in Anambra Central senatorial election, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ruled.

This was as the court sacked the suit by Sharon Ikeazor urging the court to mandate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept her as a substitute for Dr Chris Ngige.

Ngige, who is the current Minister of Labour and Productivity, was the APC candidate in the senatorial election in 2015.

While Uche Ekwunife of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was declared winner of the election by INEC, a court ruling upturned her victory giving room for another election.

Following Ngige’s withdrawal from the election, Ikeazor had dragged INEC before Justice Anwuli Chikere, demanding the court to mandate the electoral body to accept her as the candidate of the party in place of Ngige.

But delivering judgment on the matter, Justice Chikere ruled that there was no more time left for any political party to nominate candidates for elective position as regards 2015 elections.

“The time for the nomination, withdrawal or substitution of candidates for the court ordered election in Anambra Central senatorial district election has elapsed.

As decided by the Court of Appeal in the case of Labour Party against INEC, there is no room for fresh candidates in a court ordered election,” he said.

The judge therefore sacked the suit for lacking in merit.
