A Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, on Wednesday, ordered that a fisherman, Fatai Yussuf, be remanded for allegedly drowning his six-week-old daughter in the Lagos lagoon.

The defendant would be remanded in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

The 27-year-old father on December 27, 2020 was alleged to have thrown the baby in the Ajanaku lagoon in the Badagry area of the state in the presence of his son after their mother left the ailing baby in his care.

The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the defendant after committing the act lied to his wife and his elder brother that he took her to the hospital for treatment.

However, when it was discovered that Yussuf had throwned the baby into the lagoon, his elder brother reported the incident at a police station.

Yussuf was arraigned on one count of murder and the case was adjourned till February 23.
