RIVERS GOVERNORSHIP: Appeal Court dismisses Awara’s suit

The Ebonyi State Magistrate Court sitting in Abakaliki on Thursday remanded two men, Arinze Nweke, 20 and Uchenna Nwakpa, 24, in a correctional centre for alleged armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms.

The accused persons were said to have committed the offences on October 22 at No. 32 Mbam Agbo Street, Abakaliki, Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state.

They were alleged to have robbed one Nwibo Thomas of his Infinix S4, Itel P32 and Lenovo phones, among other items, with a locally-made pistol.

The police prosecutor, ASP Eze Mathias, told the court that the offences were punishable under sections 6(b) and 1(2)(b) of the Armed Robbery and Firearm (Special Provision) Act, Cap. R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The court did not grant the plea of the accused for bail on the grounds that it lacked the jurisdiction to adjudicate in the matter.

The counsel for the accused persons, A. J. Uburu, had applied for their bail and this was opposed by the police prosecutor.
