Court to settle Brazilian Serie A title race
This season’s Brazilian Serie A title race could be decided by a courtroom following a bizarre series of events.
There are seven rounds of fixtures remaining this season, with Palmeiras currently top of the table, four points ahead of second place Flamengo.
As reported by Plus55, Flamengo beat Fluminense 2-1 last week, but Fluminense filed a legal motion in an attempt to declare the result invalid after claiming that referee Sandro Meira Ricci shouldn’t have ruled out their late goal.
There was much drama during the game, with there being a fifteen minute delay in proceedings, during which Ricci was informed by match officials that a TV replay showed that the goal shouldn’t have stood, which prompted the referee to alter his stance.
Despite initially awarding the goal, the referee subsequently changed his mind, much to the fury of the Fluminense players.
Regulations state that referee’s aren’t permitted to receive help from outside officials including TV replays, which lends credence to Fluminense’s claims that they were hard done by. A final decision on the situation must be made within a month.
