There are now over 2.7 million covid-19 cases and at least 190,000 deaths globally according to the Johns Hopkins University.

The United States alone has claimed 868,395 of the global figures of infected persons with 49,861 deaths as of Thursday. With the figures nearing 50,000, analysts project a death toll worse than the 58,000 deaths recorded in a decade of fighting the Vietnam war.

In Japan, covid-19 cases have continued to mount in recent weeks. On Friday, the country’s health ministry recorded a total of 13,100 cases and 330 deaths.

Ecuador’s cases have nearly doubled as well, from 11,183 to 22,160 as of Thursday. Health minister, Juan Carlos Zevallos blamed the incidence on the backlog of tests unprocessed in the country’s laboratories. Ecuador has remained one the worst hit countries in Latin America after Brazil where 50,036 covid-19 cases and 3,331 deaths have been confirmed.

Meanwhile, cases have continued to slow down in South Korea as no new covid-19 related death was recorded on Thursday for the first time in 40 days. Of the 10,708 reported cases in the country, fewer than 2,000 person have recovered and experts have attributed the development to efforts by the government at early testing- a reliable means of “flatterning the curve.”
