COVID-19 lockdown in Lagos, Ogun, Abuja counterproductive —YPN

The Youth Party of Nigeria (YPN) has declared that the total lockdown on Lagos, Ogun and Abuja by President Muhammadu Buhari over fears of the spread of COVID-19 was not properly thought through.

The party said in a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, Ms Ilamosi Ekenimoh, said that a complete lockdown of Lagos and Abuja without palliatives would “prove to be counterproductive.”

According to Ekenimoh, the total lockdown would affect many informal workers who depend on daily income to survive.

The party said; “65% of Nigeria’s economy is informal, especially in Lagos and these individuals survive on earning a daily income. It is, therefore, a bit insensitive for the government to shut out at least five million people in Lagos without anything to fall back on for those 14 days.”

The comments by the YPN comes after the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni and his deputy, Idi Barde Gubana both donated 50 percent of their basic salaries to the state’s COVID-19 Support Fund to help fight the spread of the disease.

This was revealed on Tuesday in a statement issued by Abdullahi Bego, Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture and COVID-19 Resource Mobilization Sub-Committee Secretary.

Bego in the statement said that members of the State Executive Council, the Secretary to the State Government, Head of Service and the Chief of Staff to the governor also donated 50 percent of their basic salaries to the Fund.
