NCDC warns against mass gathering over possible spread of COVID-19

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has warned citizens to avoid mass gatherings to prevent the possible spread of the deadly coronavirus also known as COVID-19 which has claimed many lives across the globe.

Director General of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, states this on Monday, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja.

During the interview, Dr Ihekweazu said that the NCDC recommends the cancellation of mass gatherings, in compliance with World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.

He also stated further that the agency is constantly monitoring the epidemiological situation in the country.

“We are not advising the cancellation of gatherings, but our advice may change as the epidemiological situation evolves. This is assessed on a daily basis and regular updates can be found on www.covid19.ncdc.gov.ng”, he said.

Dr Ihekweazu said that moving forward, gatherings including church services, calls to prayer, other prayer meetings, sporting events, weddings, funerals, parties, music concerts, youth service camps, conferences and exhibitions would be highly monitored.

“Organisers of events should ensure adequate preparations before hosting and should also consider using distancing measures to reduce close contact among people during gatherings,” he added.
