COVID-19: Scandinavian Airline to downsize employees

Authorities of the Scandinavian Airline (SAS) have revealed plans to lay off close to 5,000 full-time employees due to the limited demand for air travels as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The statement released by the airline on Tuesday read: “As a result of COVID-19, demand is expected to be significantly affected during the remainder of 2020 and it will take some years before demand returns to the levels experienced before the outbreak.

“Consequently, SAS needs to adapt the business to a lower demand environment. As a consequence, SAS will initiate processes to reduce the size of its future workforce by up to 5,000 full-time positions.”

Meanwhile, of all countries in the Scandinavian peninsula, Sweden has been worst hit by the pandemic with over 18,926 infected persons and 2,274 deaths. Denmark has recorded 8,698 cases and 427 deaths so far while Norway has had 7,599 cases and 205 deaths according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.
