COVID-19 SCARE: Northern govs insist Almajiri system must be abolished

The Northern Governors’ Forum has expressed fears over the risk posed by the Almajiri system in this period of Covid-19 pandemic.

The governors, have therefore, vowed to evacuate the Almajiris to their parents or state of origins.

They also insisted at ensuring that the system was banned in the region.

The governors made the resolutions during a teleconferencing meeting on Tuesday that 17 of them participated and was chaired by the forum Chairman and governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong.

According to a statement by Lalong’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Macham Makut, details of the meeting were as follows:

“On border control and lockdown measures, the governors retained their earlier decision for each state to decide on the measure to adopt but reaffirmed the need for border closure to stop the inter-state spread of the disease in the region.

“The governors also discussed the risk that Almajiri children are exposed to due to the virus and they unanimously decided to ban the Almajiri system and evacuate the children to their parents or states of origin.

“They vowed never to allow the system to persist any longer because of the social challenges associated with it including the perpetuation of poverty, illiteracy, insecurity and social disorder.”
