COVID-19: S’Korea orders use of electronic wristbands on violators of self-isolation rules

The Prime Minister of South Korea, Chung Sye-kyun has ordered the use of electronic wristbands on people who violate self-isolation rules to better contain the spread of the new coronavirus disease.

Chung Sye-kyun said on Saturday that he was forced to make the order after the number of cases of people in the country breaching the self-quarantine in recent weeks had raised concerns over the spread of the virus.

“After deep consideration, the government has decided to put electronic wristbands on people who violate self-isolation rules, such as going outside without notice and not answering phone calls,” Chung said during a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters in Seoul.

“We have listened to quarantine experts and gathered opinions from various communities,” he added.

However, health authorities in South Korea said they planned to start using the wristbands within two weeks but would ask the violators’ permission before actually strapping such a device to their wrist since there was no legal ground to force people to wear it.
