The people of Agbala, a community in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo state, on Tuesday expressed joy that they escaped being accused of killing a herdsman and making away with his cows.

A herdsman in the area had on Monday night, gone into the bush where a fellow herdsman and his cows were staying. The former had met the latter asleep and stabbed him severally.

Assuming he was dead, he left with his cows.

What would have left the people of the community as prime suspect to the crime was however averted as another herder witnessed what happened and kept quiet for fear of also being attacked.

However, he quickly alerted other herdsmen in the area who swiftly apprehended the criminal herdsman, rescued the stolen cows and also stabbed him, almost to death.

Both the first victim whose cows were stolen and the criminal, who was stabbed by other herders, were said to have been rushed to the emergency unit of the Federal Medical Center, Owerri.

According to eyewitness report, the two herdsmen have slim chances of survival owing to the degree of injuries sustained.

Imo state police spokesman, Orlando Ikeokwu, who confirmed the report, said it was policemen from Agbala Police Division that rushed the herders to hospital following a distress call from the community.

He added that the two herdsmen have been responding to treatments.

According to reports, the community has been thankful to God that another herder witnessed what happened, else they would have been accused wrongly of carrying out the criminal act.
