Four months away from the 19th National Sports Festival, Cross River State has again promised to surpass standards put up by previous hosts of the games.
The state deputy governor, who doubles as the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Mr. Efiok Cobham, said that the “Centenary Games, Calabar 2014” has afforded the government the opportunity to invest so much on sports infrastructure which, he said are world class.
“We have deliberately sunk in staggering resources in order to make the 19th edition of the National Sports Festival the best so far”, he said.
Cobham said that the Festival was very important to the government and people of the state as it was coming at the terminal stage of Governor Liyel Imoke’s administration.
He stated that they were deeply committed to have facilities meant for the forthcoming National Sports Festival in November completed on schedule.
Amongst the sophisticated facilities currently installed at the Cross River stadia are the latest technology that can forestall cheating and other problems.
Cobham stressed that though the state was not rich and was not hosting to win at all cost, it was planning to give the world the best experience during the forthcoming festival.
The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Patrick Ugbe also stressed that the provision of modern facilities was the key to having a successful Sports Festival in November, assuring that some of the facilities for use in the festival are at different stages of completion and will be delivered before the event.
