Not less than 20 persons were feared dead on Sunday after a renewed cult attack at Kono-Boue settlement in Khana Local Council of Rivers State.

Sources say a number of armed cultists, suspected to be members of Iceland, invaded the community believed to be a stronghold of their Deybam rivals and started shooting sporadically.

“Some persons invaded Kono Boue in the early hours of Sunday (yesterday). The community was peaceful until they came and started shooting. At least 20 persons were murdered in cold blood” one source said.

The spokesperson for the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the deaths to news men said:

“Some persons were killed. We have been able to restore calm there. Our men have dominated the place to ensure that there is no further breakdown of law and order. We are also on ground to ensure there are no reprisals.”

Recall that four persons were said to have been beheaded by cultists last month in Omuoko, Aluu in Ikwerre LGA while three persons were killed in the Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor and Emohua local government areas.

In another attack, several persons were killed following clashes between rival cult groups in three communities in Emohua and Khana local government areas of Rivers State.

Omoni Nnamdi, who confirmed the killings said the Command had deployed tactical team to the areas of the state.
