Cultists on rampage in Rivers, 8 killed, residents on the run

Egbeda, a community in Emohua Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State has become a shadow of itself as activities of rampaging rival cult groups have led to beheading of about eight people and the community deserted.

The cause of the unfortunate incident is blamed on the battle that ensued, over who is superior and should control the area, between two dangerous cult groups, the Greenlanders and Icelanders.

The groups’ activities, it was learnt have remained a nightmare for the residents of the area, who suffer rape, robbery and other forms of abuse and attacks in the hands of the cultists.

The situation has however snowballed into dire dimension following the battle for supremacy which eventually led to the rival cult groups killing and beheading their victims.

Ripples Nigeria gathered from a source that the recent crisis in the area started sometime early this week before culminating on Friday, to about eight people being killed with some of the victims’ heads hung on the road.

Another resident of the area, who spoke to Ripples Nigeria on phone under anonymity, said he saw no less than five people brutally murdered and that one of the cult groups had a victim’s head severed and pinned on a stick at the community’s market square.

“Several people have been killed now in the community. I saw about five people. The boys are killing and cutting off people’s heads. There is fear in the community, so people are moving out,” he said.

It was not known however if security men have been deployed to the place at the time of this report..

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for Rivers State Police Command Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, has reportedly promised to comment on the situation (today) Saturday.
