CUPP member parties deny endorsing Atiku

No less than three members of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) have denied endorsing the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, as their presidential candidate.

The parties in denial of the purported endorsement are KOWA, GDPN and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

SDP national publicity secretary, Mr Mohammed Alfa, was said to have claimed the party was not part of the endorsement as it already has a candidate, Mr Donald Duke.

Alfa however said that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party would meet next week to decide on the issue.

KOWA was also quoted as saying, “Kowa Party stands for transparency and accountability and we consider the CUPP process largely flawed and quite dubiously executed. We had nothing to do with it and are not aware”.

CUPP, comprising over 40 political parties had on Wednesday announced that it had endorsed Atiku for the 2019 presidential election.

The coalition’s spokesma, Ikenga Ugochinyere, had said at the endorsement event on Wednesday that Atiku is the coalition’s consensus candidate.

But the SDP through its publicity secretary said, “We want to enjoin the general public, SDP faithful, especially all our candidates to carry on with their campaigns effectively, irrespective of the development.

“We assure you that the SDP National Working Committee (NWC) will meet and issue appropriate statement on the matter next week.”
