We’re in danger, herdsmen rape our wives, daughters – Anambra communities

About 15 communities in Orumba-South Local Government of Anambra State have cried out over the dangers posed by Fulani herdsmen in their area.

The people accused suspected Fulani herdsmen of destroying their farmlands and raping their wives and daughter.

The communities’ spokesperson, Chukwudi Ugochukwu, who revealed this during a stakeholders’ meeting of the people of the area held at Orumba-South Local Government Council secretariat in Umunze, lamented that they are under threat.

“The herdsmen allowed their cows to graze on farms, thereby destroying people’s livelihoods. Some women and girls had been raped on their way to their farms,” he said.

About 20 of such rape cases had been recorded he disclosed, adding that many of the women keep mute about their experiences for fear of stigmatisation.

“We live along the boundary with Imo State by Arondizuogu. All the farmlands there have been devastated by the herdsmen. Women who have been raped on the farmlands refused to talk so that they will not be stigmatised. The entire Umunze is under threat,” Ugochukwu cried out.

The menace of suspected Fulani herdsmen has remained nightmares in several states of the federation.

The presidency has been severally criticised by many Nigerians for its perceived silence when herdsmen attack and kill people in tens and hundreds, whereas it has always been quick to condole with foreign countries when they have less victims arising from terrorist attacks.
