Secrete trial of Dasuki, Kanu, a ploy to shield the truth from Nigerians- Fayose

Justice Hussein Yusuf of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Maitama, Abuja, has ordered the Department of State Services, DSS, to produce the embattled former National Security Adviser, NSA, Sambo Dasuki, on daily basis at the court premises to meet with his lawyers.

According to the judge, Dasuki should be brought to the premises of the court premises from Monday to Friday to enable him brief his lawyers properly and provide necessary material evidence to them for his defence.

Dasuki is standing trial alongside others over allegations of diversion of about N32 billion meant for arms procurement.

Justice Yusuf made the order on Monday after a lawyer to Dasuki, Adeola Adedipe complained that his client was not allowed access to his lawyers despite an earlier order to that effect by the court.

According to him, the court had on April 6, 2016 ordered the prosecution to allow Dasuki access to his lawyers and provide sufficient materials to the legal team for the preparation for his defence, adding that the prosecution had refused to allow Dasuki to meet with his lawyers.

He therefore asked for an indefinitely adjournment until the prosecution would comply with the court’s order.

Other defence lawyers, Akin Olujinmi, SAN, Solomon Umoh, SAN, and Abiodun Layonu (SAN), agreed with Adedipe’s request for an adjournment.

Speaking on the refusal to obey the order of the court, Layonu said there appeared to be a misunderstanding between the prosecution and Dasuki’s lawyers on the interpretation of the court’s order of April 6, urging the court to specify how the prosecution should be allowed to meet with his lawyer and the venue.

Efforts by the prosecution lawyer, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, to justify his client’s delay in complying with the court order failed, as Justice Yusuf ordered the prosecution to allow Dasuki to see his lawyers within the court’s premises.

The judge adjourned till June 6 for commencement of trial.
