Dasuki’s family drags Malami to NBA

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has been asked to investigate and sanction the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN).

The family of detained former National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), made this request in a petition lodged against Malami before the NBA, accusing the AGF of unprofessional conduct with his recent comment against the detained former NSA.

In the petition which was signed by Dasuki’s wife, Hajia Bintu Sambo Dasuki; his son, Abubakar Atiku, and his nephew, Senator Umar Dahiru, they also accused Malami of encouraging the Federal Government to disobey lawful court orders directing release of Dasuki on bail.

The AGF was said to have in a media interview insisted that Dasuki’s continued detention was justified because many people were killed due to his action while in office as NSA.

Malami had been in detention since December 29, 2015, over alleged diversion of $2.1 billion earmarked for the purchase of ammunition.

A recent court ruling granting him bail, which was not honoured by the Federal Government, was the sixth time separate court orders have granted Dasuki bail, pending his trial and none was obeyed.

Reacting to the AGF remarks following the recent court order for Dasuki’s bail, the family of the former NSA argued that such remark was unbecoming of Malami, who is the Chief Law Officer of the Federation.

Wondering how such unguided utterances that promote disobedience to lawful court orders could emanate from the AGF, the family asked NBA to invoke the code of ethics on Malami, probe him and impose deserved disciplinary sanctions against him to safeguard the rule of law for the country.

The family insisted that the statement by Malami was prejudiced, unwarranted and unbecoming of a legal practitioner.

In its petition, the family also urged the NBA to intervene in Dasuki’s ordeal by taking decisions and actions capable of compelling President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to respect the rule of law and obey all the subsisting court orders.

The petition was copied to Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN); Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC), and Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC).
