The death toll arising from a magnitude-6.9 earthquake which struck 3km from Loloan about 31km underground in the island of Lombok in Indonesia has risen from 82 to 430 victims.

Rescue officials say more than 350,000 have been displaced after the magnitude-6.9 quake struck the tourist island a week ago.

Bodies of victims were pulled from destroyed buildings following the shallow quake on August 5 that levelled tens of thousands of homes, mosques, and businesses across Lombok.

“Search-and-rescue teams are still removing victims who were buried beneath collapsed buildings and landslides,” said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

Reports say the majority of those killed – 374 people – died in the north of the island, near the quake’s epicentre. Most deaths were caused by collapsing buildings and falling debris.
