Death toll from Iran alcohol poisoning rises to 84 as 332 others suffer severe injuries

A total of 84 people have died and nearly 1,000 poisoned from consuming bootleg alcohol, authorities in Iran have revealed.

According to reports, 305 people have been treated for kidney damage and 27 others suffered eye damage from consuming the contaminated alcohol.

Iraj Harirchi, spokesman for the health ministry, 959 people had been treated for poisoning, describing the wave of cases as “very unusual.”

“Some have been arrested in this regard and people should know that even alcohol packed and sealed in foreign packages can easily be fake,” Harirchi said.

Sources say the use of smuggled or bootleg liquor in Iran over the past six weeks remains widespread despite tough penalties against its consumption.
The most poisoning cases were reported in Alborz province north of Tehran and Hormozgan on the south coast.
