Dele Bashiru nets late winner as Super Eagles pip Libya in Uyo

Substitute Fisayo Dele Bashiru scored the only goal of the encounter as Super Eagles defeated Libya 1-0 in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

The game played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday evening saw the hosts struggle to break the deadlock until the 86th minute.

The Eagles thought they had scored in the 85th minute when Ademola Lookman had the ball into the net, but it was ruled out for offside.

The breakthrough finally came about a minute later when Dele-Bashiru netted a brilliant half-volley from a fantastic Moses Simon cross.

The Eagles started the game with Stanley Nwabali in goal, Ola Aina, William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, Bruno Onyemaechi in defence, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, Wilfred Ndidi in midfield while the trio of Simon, Victor Boniface and Lookman in the attack.

The Nigerian men dominated the game from start to finish, but were mostly stopped by the resolute defending of the Libyan side.

With the win, Nigeria are now with two wins and one draw, amassing seven points from three games in Group D of the qualifying series.

The Eagles will now head to Benghazi for the second leg of the Libya tie which comes up on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
