DEMOCRACY LECTURE: Buhari unhappy at Orubebe’s absence as Jega dubs lawmakers bribe seekers

President Muhammadu Buhari was not happy at the absence of a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsay Orubebe, to the 2018 Democracy Day Lecture in Abuja on Monday.

Buhari would have appreciated that the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) had extended an invitation to Orubebe so that he could listen and learn from the lecture delivered by the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega.

Recall that Orubebe was the man who had attempted to disrupt the 2015 presidential election while the results were being announced in Abuja by then INEC boss Prof Jega.

Meanwhile, Jega at the Monday lecture described members of the National Assembly as being notorious for seeking bribes to carry out their constitutional duties.

At the event that took place at the International Conference Centre Abuja, Jega claimed of having interacted with “quite a number of chief executives who complained of high demand for bribes from members of the National Assembly in the name of so called oversight functions.”

“Some chairmen of committees at the National Assembly are notorious for seeking for bribes,” he said.

Present at the event were President Buhari, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen and other top government personalities.
