Despite historic summit, US issues guidelines for lifting of sanctions against N’Korea

Days after a historic summit in Singapore between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, the US has issued guidelines for the lifting of harsh sanctions against North Korea.

According to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, North Korea will not see any economic sanctions lifted until it has demonstrated “complete denuclearisation”.

Pompeo made the comments while he was speaking at a press conference in Seoul with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts.

Meanwhile, mixed reactions have continued to trail the recent meeting between Trump and Kim staged in Singapore.

Authorities in Seoul, South Korea are uncertain especially over remarks made by Trump during the summit in which he said he would put an end to joint military exercises with the South Koreans.

Moves to end war game in the Korean Peninsula was also praised by Russia’s Foreign Ministry which said it was necessary to stop provocative actions to ease tensions in the area.

Shinzo Abe Japan’s Prime Minister also welcomed the agreement as a “first step” towards denuclearisation but said more needed to be done.

North Korea’s biggest ally, China also responded to the meeting between the two leaders with the suggestion that sanctions against Pyongyang could be lifted.
