Despite planned summit, US says powerful sanctions still remain imposed on North Korea

Days after confirming that the proposed meeting with Kim Jong Un will be staged on June 12 in Singapore, the US has informed that its policy of tough sanctions on North Korea has not changed.

President Donald Trump had earlier said he no longer wanted to use the phrase “maximum pressure” to describe the campaign to press North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons because the two sides were “getting along.”

But when asked at a news briefing on Monday whether the “maximum pressure” campaign would continue, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters: “We have sanctions on, they are very powerful and we would not take those sanctions off unless North Korea denuclearised.”

Trump has revealed that the proposed meeting with North Korean leader Kim will be staged on June 12 in Singapore.

Reports say the new date was arrived at after a two-hour meeting with North Korean senior official Kim Yong-chol at the White House.
