Despite threat of sanction, defiant North Korea tests 'high-thrust rocket engine'

Defiant North Korean leader Kim Jong Un monitored the test of a new type of high-thrust rocket engine at the Sohae launch site which Pyongyang describes as a revolutionary breakthrough for the country’s space programme.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, the test was intended to confirm the “new type” engine’s thrust power and gauge the reliability of its control system and structural safety.

Moments after the test, Kim said the “whole world will soon witness what eventful significance the great victory won today carries” and claimed the test marks what will be known as the “March 18 revolution” in the development of the country’s rocket industry.

The test was conducted as Rex Tillerson, US secretary of state, was in China on a tour of Asia that has been closely focused on concerns over how to deal with North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes.

The ‘high-thrust rocket engine’ launch by North Korea also comes a day after Tillerson noted that US would consider military action against North Korea if it is provoked.

He made the comments while speaking in Seoul at a joint press conference with South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se. Tillerson said Washington’s policy of “strategic patience” had ended.
