Different personnel to handle Kenya's presidential re-run

Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati has revealed that key personnel for Kenya’s presidential re-run have been appointed meaning that different staff will be in charge of the Oct. 17 re-run of the presidential election.

Chebukati revealed in a statement that it had appointed for three months a project coordinator and officials to run the information technology, logistics, operations and training as well as the national tallying centre during the re-run.

“The appointment takes immediate effect,” Chebukati said.

The move is coming after the country’s Supreme Court last week nullified the result of the August vote and ordered a re-run within 60 days, saying incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory by 1.4 million votes was undermined by irregularities.

Four days ago, opposition leader, Raila Odinga called for the resignation and prosecution of some election commission officials.

In his reaction after leaving the Supreme Court moments after the election was annulled, Odinga said; “It is now clear that the entire edifice of the (election) board is rotten. Clear evidence shows that the commission was taken over by criminals … they must face criminal prosecution,” he said, naming particular officials. “We are ready but cannot repeat the election with this commission.”
