Dino Maleye : Ahmadu Bello University – A condescending incompetence

By Joseph Edgar… We have always been told that the Ahmadu Bello University was an excellent citadel of learning, the pride of Nothern Nigeria and the alma matter of some of the greatest Nigerians, including the distinguished Senator Dino Malaye, if we are to believe him. However, ever since the certificate scandal was broken by that efficiently iritating news media Sahara Reporters, observers have started to wonder just what is excellent about the institution.

The newspaper had leveled a very simple allegation that the Senator did not graduate from the school. The Senator has responded very fiercely that he not only attended the school but graduated. He went further to aver that he also conducted a masters degree from the same institution. So, how would he carry on with a masters degree in the same school if he did not graduate? He has further gone to court to ask for N5b in damages as a result of this allegation.

Both sides are so stuck in the trenches that one could easily get confused as to what position to support. In all these, the party that has the key to resolve the matter, the university is vacillating in a dust of confusion and inactivity. The response of the Ahmadu Bello University, thus far, leaves much to be desired. It has reduced itself into a large sluggish big elephant . It claims to have set up a committee to look at the matter. This, in my tiny mind, speaks volumes on its integrity and ability to carry on its activities as a responsible citadel of learning.

If I walked into the Iniversity of Lagos where I hopefully attended and also hopefully completed a masters degree in Political Science to enquire if I graduated from there and to also be reminded of my Matriculation Number or whatever information about my student ship, I would get the information in five minuets from the touch of a button. Nobody will set up a committee to deliberate on the matter.

The Ahmadu Bello University in my minds eye is only just prancing about naked on this matter and playing politics with its continued reluctance to release whatever information they have on this matter. Setting up a committee to look at the matter smirks of mischievousness and a gross lack of appreciation of the seriousness of the matter that sits in front of all of us.

Senator Dino Malaeye, whether we like it or not, is a very strategic member of this present Senate, a very influential, if not controversial politician, and his integrity needs to be outstanding if he is to continue to play that role he has been playing in the nation both in the present and in the future. The fact that his integrity has been called to question means that all stakeholders involved in this matter must immediately jump in to ensure that the truth comes out. What we expect is a response in less than five minutes from the constituted authorities of the school and this would immediately guide further action.

So while we await the report of the committee of which I really do not understand their terms of reference, the Senator has headed to court and the accusers are stuck in their position. I cringe to imagine just what kind of deliberation this committee which I am sure would be peopled by so called Professors, and other such intellectuals they would be having, when an entry level officer can answer the question in five minutes.

So the question very quickly is, Ahmadu Bello University, did Dino graduate or not? There is no need for all these red tape. Just answer!
