DIPLOMATIC ROW: US Sec of State heads to Kuwait to help resolve Gulf of Arab crisis

In a new level of involvement in efforts to help end the Gulf dispute, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is expected to arrive in Kuwait to meet with senior officials of the country.

According to a statement by the US state department, Tillerson will “meet with senior Kuwait officials to discuss the ongoing efforts to resolve the Gulf dispute.”

His visit is coming two days after Britain’s foreign minister, Boris Johnson, arrived in Saudi Arabia and met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

During his visit, Johnson urged all parties to support Kuwait’s mediation efforts and “work towards de-escalation and Gulf unity for the sake of regional stability.”

Meanwhile, in its first public response to a statement from four Arab states which are leading a boycott against it, Qatar dismissed as “baseless” accusations that it was financing terrorism.

“The State of Qatar’s position on terrorism is consistent and known for its rejection and condemnation of all forms of terrorism, whatever the causes and motives,” Qatar’s state news agency said, quoting a senior foreign ministry source.

Recall that on June 5, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with Qatar imposing a land, air and sea blockade on the country after accusing Doha of funding terrorism.
