I disown them, deal with them, father of arrested cultists tells police
A 15-man cult group known as the Awawa cult which has headquarters in the Dopemu area of Lagos State and is led by two brothers, Fatai Popoola and Yakubu Popoola have been busted by men of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, Alausa.
Reports say the father of the alleged leaders of the cult group has disowned his sons asking the police to prosecute the pair following their arrest with 13 other members identified as;  Ajayi Babatunde, Ajose Anthony, Nurudeen Adebayo, Olayemi Lasege, Afeez Sanusi, Oluwafemi Ajibade, Opeyemi Oluwasola, Oluwatobi Adewunmi, Sunday Akerele, Timothy Ogar, Actor Amaechi, Jimoh Sanni and Owolabi Adediran.
The cult members who are notorious for dispossessing residents of the Dopemu area of their property and raping young innocents girls reportedly attacked men of the Nigerian police but were overpowered by the superior fire power of the security operatives.
Speaking after the cult members were arrested, a police source who pleaded anonymity said; “The arrest of the 15 Awawa cult members was based on a tip-off. The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had got several complaints about the Awawa cult and he directed the taskforce Chairman, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, to arrest the hoodlums.
“The operation was carried out around 12am. The hoodlums attacked the policemen with weapons, but in the end, they were overpowered.”
Father of the leaders of the gang members identified as Alhaji Popoola said he had constantly warned his sons about being members of the notorious gang asking the police to prosecute them saying it would serve as a lesson to both of them.
“I have warned the two of them several times to desist from gang activities, but they refused. I am shocked that I have two sons among the suspects arrested by the police. They are no longer my sons.
“I only came as a disciplined man to tell the two of them that their end has come. I think it is a lesson to wayward children to always heed their parents’ advice.” Alhaji Popoola said.
Adebayo Taofiq, the Public Affairs Officer of the taskforce, who confirmed the arrests, informed that the suspects would soon be charged to court while also urging the public to report any suspected cult activity noticed around them.
