Djibouti’s Mahamoud Youssouf elected AU Commission chairman
The Djibouti Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahamoud Youssouf, was elected as the new chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission on Saturday.
Youssouf defeated the duo of former Kenya Prime Minister, Raila Odinga and ex-Madagascar’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Richard Randrimandrato, after seven rounds of voting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
He won the election with 33 votes in the final round of the election.
49 member states of the AU took part in the election.
Youssouf will replace Chadian Moussa Faki who held the position for eight years.
