Djokovic beats Murray, retains Qatar Open title

Novak Djokovic has retained the Qatar Open title he won last year after beating Andy Murray 6-3 5-7 6-4 in a thrilling encounter on Saturday.

The world No. 1 and No. 2 clashed in Doha in the season-opening event, with both looking to start the year in perfect fashion.

Murray may have snatched away the top spot from Djokovic at the backend of last year, but the Serbian has become the first player to beat Murray in 28
matches.

“Definitely one of the best ways to start a year,” Djokovic said after the game that lasted three hours.

“All the way, to the last shot, you never know with Andy. It’s no strange occurrence for both of us to play three sets for three hours. It’s a very physical battle. We’re both going to need a little time to recover.

“To win here, against the biggest rival, is a dream start,” he added.

This is Djokovic’s second Qatar Open title. He won the first in 2016 after beating Rafael Nadal 6-1, 6-2.
