Djokovic reaches Madrid Open semi-final as Nishikori withdraws

Novak Djokovic has automatically advanced to the last-4 of the Madrid Open as Kei Nishikori has withdrawn from their Madrid Open quarter-final clash with the Serb.

He has thus progressed to his first Masters 1000 semi-final of 2017.

Nishikori had been struggling with a wrist injury in recent weeks, which also saw him pull out of the Barcelona Open.

The tie was eagerly anticipated, but the world No. 8. apologised for pulling out.

“If you push too much you have more chances to get injured and it can be a big problem,” he said.

“That’s why I chose not to play today.”

12-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic will play either Rafael Nadal or David Goffin, who are to play on Friday, in the last four.

Djokovic has beaten Spanish duo Feliciano Lopez and Nicolas Almagro on his way to the semi-finals but their compatriot and the undisputed clay court king would represent a step-up in quality, should he move past the Belgian.
