Dogara to Buhari: it's urgent you tell Nigerians how you intend to end this recession

House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, had told President Muhammadu Buhari that it was needful for him to tell Nigerians how he wants to pull the country out of recession.

He urged him to consider an emergency session of chambers of the National Assembly, where he can share with them the unfortunate economic woes the country has found itself in, and how his government plans to salvage it.

The Speaker stated this while delivering his welcome address to the House, after it returned from an eight-week recess.

He said, “I urge Mr President to consider holding a joint emergency session of the National Assembly to brief both the legislature and indeed Nigerians of his plans to pull Nigeria out of recession. This will provide opportunity for all stakeholders to be on the same page and to act in concert for urgent national recovery.”

According to the Speaker, a comprehensive update of lawmakers on the recession issue plaguing the country at the moment would in no small measure encourage existing cooperation between the legislature and the executive arm of government.

He added, “We must never miss the opportunity the present travails offer us to launch Nigeria into its rightful destiny and place among the comity of prosperous nations.

“We need to immediately take a second look at the pace of budget execution; the spiralling rise of the dollar against the Naira and the multiple exchange rate regime; the impact of the Treasury Single Account on the economy, investment in infrastructure, tackling unemployment, among others.”

Recall that Ripples Nigeria reported Senate President Bukola Saraki on Tuesday, also saying that Nigerians are not interested in who caused recession but want food and jobs.
