Domestic investors put N1.43tr in Nigeria’s stock market in 2020 – Report

The total transaction by domestic investors in Nigeria’s stock market stood at N1.43 trillion at the end of 2020, a report has said.

The Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) said in its Domestic and Foreign Portfolio Investment Report that domestic investors outperformed their foreign counterparts by N700.7 billion in 2020.

According to the report, activity of domestic investors accounted for about 74 percent of the total transactions carried out in 2020.

Foreign investors with N729.21billion transactions only accounted for 26 percent of activities during the period.

A comparison of the figures from 2019 showed that N1.43 trillion domestic transactions were a 46 percent increase over N985.5 billion recorded in 2019 while foreign investors’ transaction decreased by 22 percent from N942.55 billion recorded in 2019.

The report also revealed that foreign outflows decreased by 7.9 percent to N481.93 billion from N523.4 billion in 2019 while foreign inflows increased by 41 percent from N419.13 billion in 2019 to N247.27 billion in 2020.

On the type of domestic transaction, institutional investors outperformed retail investors by 32 percent.

Domestic investors booked N618.75 billion in 2020, an increase of 29 percent from N477.3 billion in 2019 while institutional investors booked N820.1 billion and recorded 61.3 percent over N508.17billion put in 2019.
