DOUBLE REGISTRATION: Gov Bello waves aside INEC’s threat of prosecution

The governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, on Saturday said that he is not aware of having any problem of double registration for the Permanent Voter Card (PVC).

The governor was once accused of engaging in double registration, a punishable offence. And on Thursday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) hinted that the alleged action of the governor is still pending and that he would have been prosecuted, but for his immunity.

The electoral body went further to say that “the needful will be done at the appropriate time,” concerning the alleged double registration by governor Bello.

But Bello, responding through the state’s Director-General, Publicity and Media Strategy, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, denied any wrongdoing as far as the issue of double registration was concerned.

He said, “We are not aware that the governor was on any hook as far as the issue of double registration is concerned. He has said several times that he was not in the country when the purported double registration was allegedly done. We have evidence to that effect.”

Fanwo reiterated the governor’s position that he had applied for the transfer of his PVC to his polling unit in Okene and that the electoral commission had done what was expected of them.

The governor’s insistence that he did nothing illegal, dares INEC’s veiled threat to prosecute him whenever he leaves the governorship seat, and is no longer covered by immunity.
